How Many Swimsuits Do You Need for a Vacation? A Simple Packing Guide

Women's swimwear packing guide for a beach vacation
5 minute read

You're packing for a beach vacation.

Shorts? Check. Sandals? Check. Sunscreen? Definitely.

Then you get to your swimwear drawer and suddenly the simple question isn't quite so simple:

How many swimsuits should you actually pack?

The answer depends on how long you're travelling, how much time you'll spend in the water and whether your swimsuit will be something you wear occasionally—or practically live in.

The good news is that you probably don't need a suitcase full of swimwear.

With a little planning, a few well-chosen swimsuits can cover almost any beach vacation.

The Simple Rule: Pack Enough to Rotate

For most beach vacations, a good starting point is to have at least two swimsuits.

Why two?

Because it gives one swimsuit time to rinse and dry while you wear the other.

Putting a damp swimsuit back on isn't particularly pleasant, and constantly wearing the same suit without giving it time to dry isn't ideal for the fabric either.

If swimming is going to be a major part of your vacation, adding a third swimsuit gives you even more flexibility.

You don't necessarily need a different swimsuit for every day. Think in terms of rotation rather than days.

How Many Swimsuits for a 3-Day Trip?

For a long weekend or three-day beach getaway:

Pack 2 swimsuits.

That's usually enough to alternate between them while giving each suit time to dry.

For example:

Choosing two different styles also gives you options. You might want a bikini for relaxing at the beach and something with a little more coverage or security for swimming, boating or other activities.

How Many Swimsuits for a 5-Day Vacation?

For a five-day beach vacation:

Pack 2–3 swimsuits.

Two can still work perfectly well if you're comfortable rotating them.

Three gives you more flexibility, particularly if you'll spend a lot of time around the water.

A useful combination could be:

  • 1 favourite bikini
  • 1 second bikini with a different look (maybe with shorts)
  • 1 one-piece or monokini

That gives you enough variety for different activities without filling your suitcase with swimwear.

How Many Swimsuits for a 7-Day Vacation?

For a week-long beach vacation:

Pack about 3 swimsuits.

Three suits create an easy rotation while still keeping your luggage under control.

Instead of choosing three very similar swimsuits, think about giving each one a slightly different job.

For example:

The relaxing bikini: For lounging by the pool, tanning and easy beach days.

The active swimsuit: Something that feels secure for swimming, paddleboarding, boating or beach activities.

The versatile swimsuit: A one-piece or monokini that can transition from the beach into an outfit with shorts, a skirt or loose pants.

Now your three swimsuits aren't just different colours—they actually give you different options throughout the vacation.

How Many Swimsuits for a 10-Day Vacation?

For a longer 10-day vacation:

Pack 3–4 swimsuits.

You could certainly pack more if swimwear is a major part of your vacation wardrobe, but you don't necessarily need ten swimsuits for ten days.

With three or four, you have enough variety to rotate suits, allow them to dry and create different beach looks.

For example:

  • 2 bikinis
  • 1 one-piece
  • 1 monokini

That gives you four distinctly different options without taking up much luggage space.

And because swimwear is relatively small and lightweight, this is one area where adding one extra option usually doesn't cost you much suitcase space.

Choose Swimsuits That Work Together

One of the easiest ways to avoid overpacking is to choose swimwear that works with the rest of your vacation wardrobe.

Think about the shorts, skirts, shirts and cover-ups you're bringing.

A bikini top can sometimes work under an open shirt.

A one-piece can double as a bodysuit with shorts or a skirt.

A statement monokini may need little more than a simple cover-up and sandals to create a complete beach look.

Choosing pieces that can do more than one job means you can create more outfits with fewer things in your suitcase.

Don't Forget Swim Shorts

Swim shorts can be an especially useful addition to a beach vacation.

They provide another option for walking along the beach, paddleboarding, boating or simply when you want a little more coverage.

They can also be easy to pull over a bikini when you're moving between the beach and other activities.

If you're trying to pack light, versatility like this matters.

Take Care of Your Swimsuits While Travelling

Packing several swimsuits helps—but taking care of them while you're away matters too.

After swimming, rinse your suit in cool, clean water whenever practical, especially after exposure to chlorine or salt water.

Allow it to dry before packing it away or wearing it again.

And when it's time to travel home, try not to leave a wet swimsuit sealed in your luggage for hours if you can avoid it.

A little care can help your swimwear maintain its shape, elasticity and appearance for many more vacations.

The Vacation Swimsuit Packing Guide

If you want a simple rule to remember:

3-day trip: 2 swimsuits
5-day trip: 2–3 swimsuits
7-day trip: 3 swimsuits
10-day trip: 3–4 swimsuits

These aren't strict rules.

If you love changing your swimwear every day, bring more. If you're a minimalist and don't mind rotating two favourites, bring fewer.

The goal isn't to reach the "correct" number.

It's to have enough options that your swimsuits can dry between wears and you have something suitable for the different ways you'll spend your vacation.

Pack Less. Enjoy More.

The best vacation wardrobe isn't necessarily the biggest one.

A few carefully chosen swimsuits can give you plenty of variety without taking over your suitcase.

Choose pieces that fit well, serve different purposes and work with the rest of what you're packing.

Then stop worrying about your suitcase—and enjoy the beach.
